A Sau, in Austria, esattamente sulle Alpi, aleggia ancora oggi il “mistero del Lago Toplitz”, un enigma che non è mai stato svelato, e rischia di rimanere tale. Per un altro centinaio di anni o forse più infatti l’ente austriaco di tutela delle foreste, il Bundesforste, vieta le immersioni esplorative che dall’anno 1945 cercano di ritrovare nel lago il tesoro delle SS (chiamato il tesoro di Hitler). Alcune testimonianze dell’epoca riferirono che in un giorno di aprile del 1945 furono testimoni oculari, alla spedizione nazista che proprio in quel luogo affondò nel lago centinaia di casse di legno, probabilmente colme di diamanti e di lingotti d’oro, sottratti alle famiglie ebree durante il periodo della seconda guerra mondiale. Nelle casse sarebbero state occultate anche decine di opere d’arte rubate dai paesi europei, e un numero imprecisato di dossier, con piani e documenti segreti del Terzo Reich. Un tesoro dal valore inestimabile, che sarebbe dovuto servire per la restaurazione della Germania nazista, una volta finita la guerra. Questo immenso tesoro, ipoteticamente nascosto nelle acque del lago Topliz, rimane comunque un mistero per il Bundesforste, o quantomeno una falsificazione o una metafora della realtà ,che da più di mezzo secolo ispira storici, romanzieri e cercatori di tesori, ma in realtà non farebbe altro che danneggiare l’ecosistema delle Alpi Austriache. Ogni anno decine di esploratori, cercatori d’oro e sub improvvisati si avventurano nei boschi e sulle montagne adiacenti al lago, alla ricerca di questo colossale deposito.
Innumerevoli sono state le ricerche non autorizzate, fatte in tutto silenzio e finite spesso in tragedia. Le acque di questo lago sono insidiose e insolite, dai venti metri di profondità in giù, non esiste più ossigeno o vita animale, chi si immerge brancola nel buio più cupo, fatto di una foresta acquatica di rami intrecciati, piante e alberi caduti, in cui alcuni sub hanno perso la vita, rimanendovi intrappolati. Una vera e propria camera della morte, che ricorda quelle dei campi di concentramento, senza vie di fuga o di salvezza. Queste spedizioni oltre ad essere terribilmente pericolose, minano il delicato ecosistema del lago, animali disturbati dalla presenza umana, si allontanano dalle loro tane e dai nidi e l’intera riserva naturale si sta impoverendo. Per i ricercatori accaniti resta un’ultima speranza, un’ultima spedizione potrebbe essere consentita prima del divieto, che chiuderebbe l’accesso al lago per un intero secolo. Questa eccezione permetterebbe con un’ultima immersione da parte di esperti, la realizzazione di una mappa tridimensionale del fondo del lago, che riuscisse a dimostrare una volta per tutte, che nel lago non c’è nessun tesoro nascosto. Secondo i media locali la licenza di immersione potrebbe essere venduta o addirittura messa all’asta,una escamotage da parte delle autorità locali, per guadagnare 300mila euro da destinare alla salvaguardia dell’ambiente, oggi cosi’ fortemente compromesso. Esistono racconti e leggende su questa vicenda, che non cessano di esistere. All’alba di un mattino del 1945 Ida Weisenbacher una ragazza che a quell’epoca aveva appena 21 anni e viveva in una casa vicino al lago, fu svegliata da un plotone di nazisti e costretta insieme alla sua famiglia e ad altri residenti della zona, a caricare delle casse di legno su carri agricoli, e a trainarli fino alle sponde del lago. Il lago Topliz si trovava ad una altitudine di oltre 700 metri, e lì la stessa ragazza vide i tedeschi scaricare le casse nelle acque gelide del lago, profonde circa 100 metri. La sua non fu l’unica testimonianza, tanto che attorno agli anni 60 del secolo scorso ci fu una vera e propria caccia al tesoro, che portò al ritrovamento di decine di casse piene di banconote inglesi e americane false, di munizioni, armi, e persino di una matrice per la produzione di banconote contraffatte. L’ultima pazzia di Hitler sarebbe stata quella di far crollare le economie inglesi e statunitensi, mettendo in circolazione milioni di dollari e di sterline falsi. La spedizione più famosa nel lago fu finanziata nel 2000 dal ” World Jewish Congress”, e si svolse sotto le telecamere della Cbs, ma fu individuato principalmente un bunker, proprio nei pressi del lago, questo servì soprattutto a rinforzarne l’enigma intitolato: “Il lago Topliz e il tesoro di Hitler”..
