Conviene essere super intelligenti o addirittura geniali? Il quesito non è banale, giacchè la Storia ci insegna che un mondo dominato dai mediocri non tollera chi eccelle nelle facoltà cognitive e intellettuali. Quasi sempre disadattati ed emarginati, i geni hanno condotto nelle diverse epoche esistenze spesso segnate da un tragico destino, consumate nell’isolamento e talora nella pazzia, sebbene l’umanità sia stata in genere debitrice nei loro confronti per i contributi straordinari in termini di conoscenza, di scoperte e d’invenzioni, che costoro hanno saputo offrire. Numerosi gli esempi: da Vincent van Gogh a Nikola Tesla, tanto per citarne due a caso. Indubbiamente, la genialità confina frequentemente con la psicopatologia o con stranezze caratteriali incomprensibili ai più. “Genio e follia hanno qualcosa in comune: entrambi vivono in un mondo diverso da quello che esiste per gli altri”, sentenziava appunto Arthur Schopenhauer. Gli aneddoti in tal senso si sprecano. Chi fuma tanto, chi prende 50 tazze di caffè al giorno, chi dorme e chi no. E chi odia il resto del mondo. Honorè De Balzac, ad esempio, era letteralmente dipendente dal caffè. Nel periodo in cui scriveva La Commedia Umana, arrivò a berne fino a 50 tazze al giorno. Nel 1830 pubblicò un articolo su una rivista francese intitolato “Piaceri e dolori del caffè”, dove si legge: “Il caffè scivola nello stomaco, e subito avverti una commozione generale. Le idee cominciano a muoversi come battaglioni della Grande Armata sul campo di battaglia, e la battaglia si svolge. I ricordi arrivano al galoppo, portati dal vento”. E si potrebbe andare avanti così senza soluzione di continuità… Con altre vicende bizzarre. Tuttavia, un caso, particolarmente singolare e al contempo apodittico, vale la pena di raccontare.
L’uomo più intelligente del mondo
William James Sidis nacque a New York il 1º aprile 1898 da immigrati ucraini di religione ebraica. Il padre, Boris Sidis, laureato e professore ad Harvard in psicologia, era giunto negli Stati Uniti nel 1887 per sfuggire alle persecuzioni politiche. Noto psichiatra, pubblicò numerosi libri e articoli, diventando un pioniere della psicopatologia. Fu anche poliglotta, e il figlio ne seguì l’esempio in tenera età. La madre, Sarah Mandelbaum Sidis, fuggì dalla Russia con la famiglia, per evitare i pogrom del 1889 e frequentò la scuola di medicina dell’Università di Boston, laureandosi nel 1897. William imparò presto a parlare: a sei mesi pronunciava già le prime parole, a un anno parlava correttamente l’inglese. Imparò presto anche a leggere: a 18 mesi leggeva il New York Times. A tre anni scriveva con una remington appoggiata al seggiolone. In un anno imparò il latino, tanto che, in occasione di una festa, lesse al padre un brano del De bello Gallico. In seguito si dedicò al greco e cominciò a leggere Omero in lingua originale. A cinque era già celebre per le sue abilità, sia nella locuzione che nel calcolo, ed elaborò una formula che permetteva di stabilire in che giorno della settimana si era prodotto un determinato evento storico. A sei anni aveva la padronanza orale e scritta di altre sei lingue, oltre alla madrelingua: francese, russo, tedesco, ebraico, turco ed armeno. A otto anni conosceva ormai la logica aristotelica. Diventato più bravo del padre in matematica, fu in grado di elaborare una tavola logaritmica in base 12. Scrisse libri di astronomia e anatomia e superò l’esame di ammissione a Harvard, anche se attese tre anni per frequentare l’università, perchè troppo piccolo. A dodici anni cominciò, però, a soffrire di crisi nervose, e a provare fastidio a causa del successo. Benché nel 1906 l’università lo avesse rifiutato a causa della giovane età, nel 1909 William risultava, e risulta ancor oggi, il più giovane studente mai iscritto ad Harvard. A 11 anni William entro nei corsi grazie a un programma che permetteva di iscrivere precocemente studenti dotati. Il 18 giugno 1914 ottenne un Bachelor of Arts cum laude.
Conseguito il diploma, dichiarò ai giornalisti l’intenzione d’intraprendere la cosiddetta “vita perfetta”, cioè di ritirarsi a vita privata. Concesse un’intervista a un reporter del Boston Herald, nella quale rese nota l’intenzione di rimanere celibe e dichiarò che le donne non lo attraevano, anche se più tardi avrebbe stabilito un forte legame affettivo con una ragazza, certa Martha Foley.
Nel dicembre del 1915 entrò all’università diventando Graduate Fellow, e cominciò a lavorare per il dottorato. Sidis insegnò in tre corsi: geometria euclidea, geometria non euclidea e trigonometria scrivendo in greco una dispensa per il corso di geometria euclidea. Meno di un anno dopo, tormentato dagli studenti che si prendevano gioco di lui e dal dipartimento che gli rimproverava di non avere i requisiti per l’insegnamento, William lasciò il posto e tornò in New England. La notizia del ritiro ebbe sui giornali risalto nazionale.
Il primo maggio del 1919 partecipò a una manifestazione per la giornata dei lavoratori che fu bloccata dalla polizia e William fu arrestato. Ovviamente, la notizia ebbe di nuovo vasta eco sui media dell’epoca. Il procuratore distrettuale lo accusò di aver guidato la manifestazione e chiese 18 mesi per assalto e sommossa come sancito dal Sediction Act del 1918, aggiungendo una cauzione di $ 5.000 per la sua libertà. Durante il processo che seguì, William affermò di essere un socialista obiettore di coscienza e di non credere in Dio. Grazie all’intervento del padre, che si accordò con il giudice, il caso fu archiviato, evitando a William il carcere. Come ricompensa, i genitori lo sequestrarono per un anno nel sanatorio del New Hampshire, da loro gestito, dopodiché lo inviarono in California, dove per un altro anno lo fecero oggetto di restrizioni, minacciando di internarlo in una clinica per malati mentali. Si pensa che conoscesse più di quaranta lingue. Morì in solitudine, per emorragia cerebrale, a 46 anni.
Una tragica biografia che parla da sola. Un monito per tutti coloro che vorrebbero essere super, e magari non lo sono. Forse nascere geni è un tiro mancino del destino. Forse, per vivere sereni e tranquilli, stimati e riveriti (ed anche ben remunerati), oltre all’elogio della follia di erasmiana memoria, e dunque della genialità che talora ne è l’altra faccia, sarebbe il caso di vivere l’elogio della mediocrità. Qualità, o nequizia che dir si voglia, di cui il mondo contemporaneo abbonda.
