Oggi, rimane uno dei Paesi più pericolosi di quell’area continentale, sconvolto da un’altra guerra latente ma non meno feroce, quella combattuta dalle gang criminali. Non a caso, El Salvador è il secondo Stato al mondo per numero di omicidi dopo l’Honduras: le autorità riferiscono che da gennaio ad agosto 2015 gli omicidi sono stati 4,246, più di 17 persone uccise in media ogni giorno. Agosto è stato il mese più nefasto dal termine della guerra civile del 1992, con 911 omicidi – di cui 52 avvenuti il 23 agosto. La polizia stima che l’80% dei delitti siano ricollegabili alla faida tra gli MS-13 e i loro rivali della gang “Barrio 18” scoppiata nel 2012. E il Governo non sa come arginare il dilagare della violenza… Ecco perché è arrivato a consentire che la prigione di Ciudad Barrios sia lasciata completamente in mano ai membri della “Mara Salvatrucha” o MS-13. Tant’è che neppure le guardie osano mettere piede all’interno del carcere temendo di essere catturate, torturate e accoppate.
