Eliott Erwitt e la celebre agenzia “Magnim Photos, erano un “corpo fotografico”unico, e si sono aggiudicati attraverso gli scatti piu’ famosi al mondo, i premi più ambiti della storia della fotografia mondiale. Erwitt è stato un fotografo riconosciuto per le sue originali capacità, universalmente annoverato tra i più grandi e ironici osservatori di immagini di tutti i tempi. Si è fatto apprezzare per il suo stile unico e inconfondibile, un genio dello stile “in bianco e nero”,ma non è trascurabile nel colore. Aveva sempre un punto di vista privilegiato ma casuale, perchè osservava la scena, la valutava, capiva che sarebbe diventata una icona dell’immagine o una pagina di storia dell’ambiente, del costume, dei contrasti, degli oggetti e persino degli animali, in particolare i cani che adorava e che posavano nelle inquadrature come star.
Aveva insomma uno stile inconfondibile e immediatamente riconoscibile, per questo è considerato uno dei maestri più noti ed espressivi che si siano dedicati all’arte fotografica, divenendo famosi tramite un oggetto, come la celebre “Leica M3, amica inseparabile e sempre presente “. Erwitt nacque in Francia nel 1928 da genitori emigrati russi. Trascorse l’infanzia in Italia per poi tornare in Francia, fino al definitivo trasferimento negli USA, a New York per la precisione, dove decise di ottenere la residenza. Domicilio registrato solo sui documenti, perchè per Erwitt risiedere in un luogo, significava stabilirsi e abitare in un posto diverso ad ogni spostamento dove di volta in volta si trovava per lavoro, dal momenti che non andava da nessun’altra parte, permaneva. Era appassionato di viaggi, una passione dovuta principalmente al mestiere che faceva, ma era un “giramondo per natura”. Studiò alla “Hollywood High School” e apprese il mestiere presso un laboratorio di fotografia, con la mansione specifica di “addetto alla camera oscura”.
Divenne un professionista e iniziò una brillante carriera nel 1949 durante un viaggio tra Italia e Francia, dove realizzò degli scatti perfetti che chi era del mestiere notò. Nel 1951 fu chiamato sotto le armi dall’esercito Americano, ma non si separò mai dalla fedele Leica. Roy Stryker e Robert Capa si accorsero del suo talento, e proprio Capa gli offrì la grande opportunità della sua vita, unirsi alla Magnum Photos, in qualità di membro. Da quel momento Erwitt cominciò a svolgere grandi servizi come socio della Magnum, e lavorò per famose agenzie di pubblicità, trattando campagne pubblicitarie per brend conosciutissimi. Privilegiò l’attualità contemporanea anzi la fece emergere nelle immagini che sono passate alla storia della fotografia mondiale. Durante i suoi spostamenti Erwitt, viaggiava accompagnato da ingombranti attrezzature,ma lo faceva su un doppio binario lavorativo, uno strettamente legato all’agenzia di cui era membro, l’altro strettamente privato che possiamo quasi definire ” le istantanee del cuore”, scatti magicamente emersi dall’inseparabile Leica, maneggevole, poco ingombrante e strettamente personale. Furono quelle immagini catturate da quell’obiettivo da quell’apparecchio, che registrarono tutto ciò che lo colpì e lo rese famoso in tutto il mondo. Nel 1968 divenne presidente della Magnum, ricoprì quella carica per tre volte durante la sua vita, non trascurando altre passioni sopraggiunte in seguito di documentarista e sceneggiatore di serie televisive, scrittore, (nei suoi libri ha raccolto tutto il suo sapere in materia di fotografia e questi testi hanno fatto la storia di questa arte). Le serie televisive che ideò lo portarono ad essere considerato un leader, ma gli accadeva ovunque operasse. Ricevette un premio molto ambito”dall’American Film Institute” che accrebbe la sua già nota fama.
Erwitt ha realizzato la quasi totalità dei suoi scatti in bianco e nero, con i quali ci offre una visione del mondo estremamente personale, ignora per lo più il paesaggio per concentrarsi quasi esclusivamente su persone e animali colti in atteggiamenti apparentemente insignificanti, spesso anche comici, a volte in contrasto o stridenti, ma ad ogni sguardo in grado di suscitare empatia in chi osserva. Da queste fotografie emergono principalmente le emozioni proprie degli esseri umani, viste e rappresentate in modo semplice, sincero immediato, e sempre caratterizzate da un tocco di umorismo che trapela da una nota presente nell’immagine. “Uno dei risultati più importanti che puoi raggiungere, è far ridere la gente. Se poi riesci, come ha fatto Chaplin, ad alternare il riso con il pianto, hai ottenuto la conquista più importante in assoluto. Non miro necessariamente a tanto, ma riconosco che si tratta del traguardo supremo”. E’ stato un artista incontrastato della seconda metà del dopo guerra, pubblicava le foto piu’ impertinenti celato da uno pseudonimo “A.S.S.” (l’acronimo non è casuale) ma la maschera che lui stesso dedicava senza diplomazia al mondo dell’arte contemporanea ed a un certo tipo di fotografia. In questo modo ha dato vita ad un suo alter ego irriverente, che amava tutto ciò che detestava: il digitale e il photoshop, la nudità gratuita e l’eccentricità fine a se stessa. Una maschera dissacrante che ha preso in giro alcuni artisti, con una esilarante parodia, che fa ancora sorridere e, nello stesso tempo, ha invitato a una seria riflessione sul mercato dell’arte. La mostra “Elliott Erwitt Persona” è allestita nella prestigiosa cornice dei Musei di San Domenico a Forlì, dal 23 settembre 2017 al 7 gennaio 2018, ed è la prima grande retrospettiva delle sue immagini sia in bianco e nero che a colori.
